In the movie Kimi no Na wa (translated to Your Name) the relationship between two complete opposites develops in an artistic way. A high school girl from the country and a teen boy in Tokyo switch places at random times during the week. They notice when they wake up in different bodies in the morning. They run into typical conflicts such as getting dressed, using the bathroom, and dealing with relationships they are unfamiliar with. They leave messages and diaries to each other via smartphone. This movie was made during the 2017 winter anime season and is made by the creator of the famous heartbreak romance 5 Centimeters Per Second.
During Kimi no Na wa, we see life through the eyes of each individual as they swap bodies. You can tell who is in the person’s body you are currently watching by how they act. For example, while in Taki’s body, our main female character Mitsuha refers to herself with the term watashi instead of ore. Taki has his experiences as a girl as well. While in Mitsuha’s body, he acts much more hostile and also gets more guy attention then Mitsuha did as her actual self. However, when Mitsuha was herself, and her admirers confessed, for some reason she couldn’t accept any of their feelings.
Sharing bodies, Mitsuha and Taki share a bond that no one else can understand let alone break. They are separated many times but always find their way back to each other. They don’t understand the feelings they have for each other until they are lost. Most people have this problem, making this movie one that can be really relatable. This is an especially heartwarming movie that the whole family can watch. MAL ( Myanimelist.com) rates this an outstanding 9.3 rating. This movie was one of the most anticipated movies coming out this season and did not disappoint. I give it a 9.5 for having one of the best plots, graphics, and soundtracks I have ever witnessed. Movies like this make me happy to be alive…sadly. I watch anime looking for shows and movies like this and I hope it can make you feel as happy as I did.
