Disney’s The Queen of Katwe starring Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo, and Madina Nalwanga is based on a true story. It focuses on the life of ten-year old Phiona Mutesti, and her family enduring constant hardships in the slums of Katwe, Africa. One day, Phiona becomes fascinated with chess when she meets Robert Katende who teaches chess to some of the kids in her village. Through the help of Robert and her family, Phiona is taken on a journey that changes the world around her. Overtime, Phiona excels in chess and begins to frequently win many competitions. Starting to do tremendously well in chess gives her a new view into life outside of her village. Through all this Phiona must realize how far she must go to pursue her dream of chess while not getting caught up in materialistic things. The Queen of Katwe also displays wonderfully the bond of family and the strength of a mother’s love. Phiona’s Mother, Nakku Harriet raises her family all alone while trying to provide for them at the same time. The movie was filmed entirely in the slums of Katwe, giving the audience a chance to truly feel as if you are in Uganda, Africa. It shows the rawness of some of the struggles that people across the world face. When watching this film I was able to truly sympathize with each character, and develop a closeness with them unlike any movie I have watched before. Every actor and actress really invests in their character, using their emotions to bring them to life. Watching this movie I truthfully did not know what to think, but after leaving the theater I was extremely pleased with what I had seen. If you are looking for a film that will make you laugh, but also teach you some serious life lessons, The Queen of Katwe is a movie you have to see. Unlike most movies this movie features an all Black cast which is very rare to see in Hollywood today. No matter the nationality, everyone can learn something from watching this film. Greatness can be achieved no matter where you are from.
The Queen of Katwe delivers the message to never give up and to go after your dreams. Just as the main character, Phiona went after her love her the game chess, God encourages us as Christians to pursue what we love as well. 2 Peter 1:10 says, “Therefore brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Jesus is saying that, to those who make an effort to decide what they want to be, and go after what makes them happy he will have a reward in heaven filled with rich blessings. Even though we can be rewarded on earth for following our dreams our heavenly father has a much better reward in heaven waiting for us.
